Citizens' Jury - Day 3 review
The nuclear Citizens’ Jury is edging closer to its final report, with today spent focusing on key topics they consider important for all South Australians to consider and discuss.
The jury of 50 randomly selected South Australians reconvenes tomorrow to finalise its report, which will be presented to the Premier Jay Weatherill later in the day.
Today they had access to more than 20 witnesses who took part in a series of round-table discussions, answering the Jury’s questions around four key themes:
- Community consent (including impact on remote communities, especially Aboriginal communities)
- Economics (including world perception of South Australia and future technology)
- Safety (including disaster management and environment)
- Trust (including regulation, legislation and accountability)
Facilitator Emily Jenke said the group had worked hard to develop a draft response to the question “What are the parts of the Royal Commission’s Report that everyone needs to discuss?'.
“There has been a lot of serious deliberations by all of you to get to this stage, and there are a number of questions still out there to discuss,” she said.
“At the end of tomorrow, the Premier will be here and you will be handing over a report that you are all proud of and that you own.”
Once again, a group of public observers were in the room, watching the proceedings and sharing in the information being discussed. Observers are also viewing the jury at work in three sessions tomorrow.
Key sessions from Sunday’s program will be live-streamed and transcripts will be available on the Citizens' Jury page. There will also be regular updates on Facebook and Twitter.
The jury will tomorrow finalise and present its fully independent report to the Premier. It will outline the topics and questions they believe the community should consider during the three-month state-wide consultation period, which starts later this month.
