Jury calls expert witnesses for final report
The Citizens’ Jury into the Nuclear Fuel Cycle has called more than 20 witnesses to appear this weekend to assist with their final report into the state’s possible expansion of nuclear activity.
The jury of 50 randomly selected South Australians is exploring topics of key importance to the community from the Nuclear Fuel Cycle Royal Commission Report, which was delivered to the State Government in May this year.
Facilitator of the Citizens’ Jury process democracyCo CEO Emily Jenke said the jurors have called a variety of witnesses to delve further into the report.
“From an initial selection of 85 people, the jurors have refined the list to 23 key contacts who are available to appear and provide evidence either by phone, video or in person,” Ms Jenke said.
“These witnesses come from a range of organisations and have expertise in areas including the environment, economics, Aboriginal heritage and culture, safety, regulation and geology. They’ll spend Saturday morning in small groups with the jurors, discussing topics of interest and answering questions of them.”
Over the four days, the Jury is tasked with identifying the important questions for South Australians in relation to the Royal Commission’s recommendations. On Sunday, the Jury will produce a guide identifying the key issues that need to be considered and discussed during the state-wide consultation program.
Among the witnesses appearing in person on Saturday morning:
- Professor Ian Lowe, Emeritus Professor of Science, Technology and Society, Griffith University
- Dr Jim Green, National nuclear campaigner, Friends of the Earth
- Associate Professor Haydon Manning, Social of Social and Policy Studies, Flinders University
- Enice Marsh, Anggumathanha Camp Law Mob
- Rod Campbell, Research director, The Australia Institute
- Cecilia Woolford, Chair, Outback Communities Authority
- Professor Paul Kerin, Head of School of Economics, University of Adelaide
- Tim Johnson, Project Manager, Jacobs
- Jack Dillich, Chief Inspector and Head of Regulatory Branches, Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency
